Tirzepatide is a novel dual receptor agonist for glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), administered once a week. GLP-1 and GIP belong to the intestinal incretins and are polypeptides secreted by the mucosa of the human gastrointestinal tract. The former can bind to the receptors on pancreatic islet cells and stimulate insulin secretion, thereby exerting the hypoglycemic effect. It can also delay gastric emptying, suppress appetite, and control body weight. The latter has functions such as inhibiting the secretion of gastric acid and pepsin, stimulating insulin release, and inhibiting gastric peristalsis and emptying, which can complement the effect of GLP-1 receptor agonists. Tirzepatide integrates the two insulin-stimulating effects into a single molecule, representing a new drug for treating type 2 diabetes.
