Squalene is an organic compound found in a variety of sources. It is a hydrocarbon and triterpene, meaning it is made up of carbon and hydrogen atoms and is in the same family as steroids and cholesterol. Chemically speaking, it is an unsaturated (having double bonds) hydrocarbon (containing only carbon and hydrogen) molecule that can undergo oxidation. On the plus side, this means that squalene can act as an antioxidant. Squalene is a key component of the skin's natural moisturizing barrier, helping to keep the skin hydrated and soft. Our bodies naturally produce squalene, an important moisturizing factor in the skin. Unfortunately, as we age, the amount of squalene produced in our bodies decreases dramatically. This can lead to dry skin, wrinkles and loss of volume. Squalene is a lipid naturally produced by skin cells and accounts for approximately 13% of human sebum. The amount of squalene produced by the body decreases with age, with production of this natural moisturizer peaking in the teenage years and slowing down in your 20s or 30s. As a result, skin becomes drier and rougher as we age. Approximately 13% of human sebum is squalene, which means it is an important skin homogeneous component and NMF (natural moisturizing factor).
