5-Aminolevulinic acid phosphate, commonly known as ALA phosphate, is a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of heme, an important component of hemoglobin, myoglobin and various enzymes in the body. ALA phosphate is synthesized through a series of enzymatic reactions that occur primarily in mitochondria, the power stations of our cells. It is formed from the condensation of glycine and succinyl-CoA, which are important components of our metabolic pathways. The synthesis of heme is critical to human health as this molecule plays a vital role in oxygen transport, electron transfer and detoxification.
